Every year since 2002, students in the NUI Galway degree programme “BSc in Physics with Astrophysics” have travelled with experienced researchers to Loiano Observatory, operated by the University of Bologna, in the Appenine Mountains. This year, our run happens to coincide with Space Week in Ireland!
We will have full use of the large 1.5m Cassini Telescope for 4 nights, Wednesday 5th to Saturday 8th. The students will plan and carry out their own programme of observations, using the dual-mode (imaging and spectroscopy) BFOSC instrument, and will analyse the data themselves on-site.
We will post behind-the-scenes images, telescopic results, and blog updates “live from Loiano” to the Space Week site, for everyone to see.
