This year Space Week is going on the road!
Astronaut Steve Swanson will join the team from MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory as they explore the wonders of the cosmos and the Emerald Isle.
The road-trip will kick off at MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory (BCO) on October 4th before travelling on to locations in Cork, Galway, Offaly, and Dublin.
Stop 1 – MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory
Steve will officially launch Space Week with the team from BCO.
Stop 2 – Cork School of Music
This family friendly event will feature an interview with Steve about his career at NASA with opportunities for a Q&A session with attendees! Following the interview a host of space and science themed booths and workshops are available to explore! Tickets available here.
Stop 3 – Galway Atlantaquaria
The upcoming launch of the Europa Clipper mission will see a scientific mission explore the moon Europa for potential signs that it is habitable to ocean life. We’ll be joining the team from Galway Atlantaquaria to explore how life evolved here on Earth’s oceans, and what that could mean for life on Europa and beyond!
Stop 4 – Birr Castle
Birr Castle is home to Leviathan – An enormous telescope that was once the largest in the world! Space Week ambassador Seanie Morris will join the team as they explore the rich history of Irish contributions to the fields of astronomy and science at this iconic heritage site.
Stop 5 – Explorium Dublin
The theme for Space Week 2024 is Space and Climate Change. To help us explore this idea Steve and the BCO team will join Dr Niamh Shaw and Mark the Science Guy at Explorium’s “Cool It” exhibition.
You can follow the Space Week Road Trip at the BCO Youtube Channel. Subscribe today to get notifications of the livestreams from each location.
ASK AN EXPERT
During the Livestream from each location we’ll have a chance to ask experts questions submitted by viewers. If you have a question for Steve just ask below! Please feel free to ask a question of our other speakers as well. Want to ask the Galway Atlantaquaria team about Ireland’s sea life? Maybe you want to ask Seanie Morris about the Leviathan telescope? Do you want to know about Dr Niamh Shaw’s time on simulated Mars missions? Just let us know who your question is for and we’ll do our best to get to as many questions as possible.
