Most people know about asteroids, but do you know how they work?
Asteroids are chunks of rock that orbit the sun. They’re a little smaller than Earth’s moon and made up of different types of minerals. Some asteroids have very little gravity, so if you were to stand on one, you’d just bounce around like a rubber ball. Others are massive, with enough gravity to pull you down into them.
There are millions of asteroids in our solar system, and some of them are on a collision course with Earth! But don’t worry—astronomers keep an eye on them with telescopes so they can predict if any are going to hit us.
